Local Public Funding Supports & Enriches the Work of Cleveland Classical Guitar Society

Over the past several years, the Cleveland Classical Guitar Society’s concert series has grown from a tiny local series to the International Series which- it’s no exaggeration- is one of the greatest in the nation. How many other cities present David Russell, Manuel Barrueco, and the L.A. Guitar Quartet in consecutive years? Those few that do are typically charging much more for their concerts. This is no isolated feat either- Cleveland has per capita the greatest arts scene in the country. This is one of the reasons that I will shout from the rooftops Cleveland is the best city in the US, and I hope that you are just as proud!

One of the reasons for Cleveland’s great success in the arts is local support. CCGS has received over $16,000 in support over the last few years from Cuyahoga Arts & Culture. While other funders close themselves to smaller organizations such as ourselves, CAC has made kept themselves open to organizations of our size and we owe much of our growth to them. Most people don’t realize that ticket sales make up a small portion of the costs to run such a series, and with so much additional free programming that we provide- including master classes, open recitals, CCGS at Playhouse Square, and our extensive education program in low-income neighborhoods- any reliable funding source such as CAC is crucial.

Cuyahoga Arts & Culture is the public funder of arts and culture organizations, programs and events in Cuyahoga County. Cuyahoga Arts & Culture’s sole funding source is a dedicated cigarette tax levied within Cuyahoga County. Established by voters in 2007, CAC has awarded over 1,200 grants since then, distributing over $125 million in tax dollars to more than 300 organizations based in the County.

Cuyahoga Arts & Culture’s only funding source is a dedicated tax within Cuyahoga County. Renewal of this funding source will be on the ballot on November 3 for voters to consider. Please take a few minutes to learn more about this important source of public funding and Cuyahoga Arts & Culture by visiting their website: cacgrants.org. Having seen the positive impact CAC has had on many, many people through a variety of arts and cultural organizations large and small, I cannot overstate the importance of this issue.
