This performance marks the Cleveland debut of DUO NOIRE. Duo Noire is a “virtuosic pair” (I Care if You Listen) of the pioneering American classical guitarists, Thomas Flippin and Christopher Mallett. Offering “profoundly enjoyable” premieres of genre-bending contemporary music with “spectacular precision” (St. Louis Post- Dispatch), Duo Noire is breaking new ground in the world of classical guitar.
In June 2018, the duo released their critically-acclaimed debut album, Night Triptych, on New Focus Recordings. It was named one of the best classical music albums of 2018 by both All Music and I Care if You Listen. It features new works written for Duo Noire by accomplished women composers: Grammy-nominee Clarice Assad, Courtney Bryan, E.C.M. Artist Golfam Khayam, Mary Kouyoumdjian, Gity Razaz, and Gabriella Smith. The duo collaborated with musicians from The Cleveland Orchestra in a recent performance of an original work by Thomas entitled A Dark Winter in a Lost Year (created for CCGS’s 2021 Creative Fusion video series).
